10 Reasons to do a Boudoir Shoot

October 21, 2019

1. Celebrate being comfortable in your own skin.

The journey to self love is one that we all must make.  If there’s one thing I’ve learned from shooting boudoir over the years, it’s that all women no matter their size, are working to get there.  It’s tough.  We live in a society that idolizes unrealistic body standards.  Unrealistic and more often than not, bodies that simply aren’t real. It’s no wonder so many of us struggle with body issues.

A boudoir session can change everything.  Seeing yourself through someone else eyes is for most women, completely shocking. The most common reaction I hear to clients viewing their photos for the first time is “I can’t believe that’s me!”

One of the best reasons to book a boudoir shoot is to celebrate your new found self love or take a huge step towards it.

2.  It’s Your Birthday!

Give yourself the gift of self confidence and empowerment this year.  I have clients who book s shoot near the birthday every year!  Why not celebrate being another year wiser with a photoshoot?  Confidence and self love is a pretty kick-ass gift for yourself, don’t you think?

3. Celebrate your fitness or weight loss journey.

You’ve been working your ass off and have hit a milestone on your journey to health.  Let’s document it!  Very often I see clients who have lost significant amounts of weight who still see themselves as they were pre weight loss.  For some reason it’s really hard for their new physique to sink in fully.  You’ve crushed some goals.  Now treat yourself to the ultimate reward.

4.  You’re a Warrior.

So many women out there are fighting health battles.  Whether you’re still in the fight or you’ve recently been given a clean bill of health, a photoshoot can remind you that you’re a warrior and that you can do anything you can set your mind to.

5.  A gift for your partner.

First and foremost, a boudoir shoot is a gift for you.  That said, your partner is going to love receiving your images as a gift!  I love it so much when a significant other sends me a message thanking me for the beautiful photos of their loved one and for the change they’ve seen in her since the shoot.  Give yourself a gift and check off a birthday, holiday or anniversary gift while you’re at it!

6.  Empower your inner (or outer) feminist.

Society has told us our entire lives how to look, how to act and that our worth is defined by whatever unrealistic standard is in vogue at the moment.

We have spent our whole lives looking at advertisements that sexualize us. Then, we’re told over and over that we’re either a trollop or a prude because of the way we dress.

So many of us have been made to feel that our bodies are there for others to exploit and it starts before we’re even teenagers.

Taking control over your own body and sexuality, falling in love with yourself and your body, no matter what it looks like no matter what size, shape, or age is very empowering.  It’s incredibly empowering to FEEL beautiful when you’re terrified whether you’ll hate the way you look. It’s empowering to do brave things you didn’t think you were capable of. It’s empowering to feel worthy to show others that you like yourself enough to put yourself out there.

Girl…your body, your choice.

7.  A new beginning.

Life is full of new beginnings.  Once you get into middle age you start to see how life is cyclical.  All the ebbs and flows.  The ups and downs.  I love it when the seasons change because it’s an opportunity to reflect back and start anew.  What’s your new beginning?  What are you transitioning into?  Anytime you experience a new beginning it’s a great time to express yourself.  A boudoir session can be a very therapeutic way to strip away the old and bring in the new.

8.  You can’t pour from an empty cup, mama.

Women are natural caretakers.  Whether you’re a working mom or stay at home mom you probably have a to-do list a mile long.  It can be easy to get caught up in the “oh I don’t need this” or “I’d rather spend money on my kids” talk.

The best mom is one that feels her needs are being met.  Taking some time for yourself and treating yourself does not make you a bad mom.  Let me say that again.  Taking time for yourself does not make you a bad mom.  Being a mom gives us an opportunity to set an example for our kids on how to treat yourself which is turn also sets an example on how to treat others.

Make sure you get a spot on that never ending to-list.  You and your family will be the better for it.

9.  The end of a relationship.

So you’re newly single.  Breakups are never easy and going through a divorce can be one of the toughest times in your life.  Start this new chapter in your life with some new found confidence in yourself.  And if you’re ready to start putting yourself out there, you need a new profile picture for your social media and Tinder profile!

10. Oh baby!

I know that the postpartum time doesn’t jump out as one of the most popular times for a boudoir shoot but I actually shoot lots of women that are within the first 6 months of giving birth.  For some women, they have these newly full curves that they love and want to document!  For some, they’re not quite feeling themselves yet and want to do a shoot to embrace their new postpartum body.  Whichever your reason, if you’re a new mom you’re likely exhausted and in dire need of some me time.  Take a step back towards feeling like you again.

Boudoir

I photographed my first boudoir photoshoot in 2007, and since then I have been in absolute awe of what boudoir shoots do for women and their self confidence. As a woman myself I completely understand the struggle.  It’s getting better out there, but we are still constantly bombarded with messages of not being good enough. […]
